Tag Info & Care Instructions

How do you care for a dog ID tag?

To keep your dog ID tag looking its best, clean it gently and handle it carefully when attaching it to your pet’s collar. Regular light cleaning will help maintain the finish while keeping the engraving clear and readable.

How do you clean an engraved dog tag?

To clean an engraved dog tag, use a soft brush such as a toothbrush to gently remove dirt, dust and debris from the engraved areas. Synthetic steel wool or scotch pad can be used as well.

For general cleaning, warm water and mild soap can be used, followed by drying with a soft cloth.

If additional cleaning is needed, a very light polish can be applied to the metal surface. Avoid abrasive materials or aggressive scrubbing on blackened designs, as this may reduce the surface finish. The engraving itself will not be affected.

Will cleaning affect the engraving?

No, cleaning will not affect the engraving.

All of our dog ID tags are deeply engraved into solid metal, meaning the text will not wear off or disappear over time. Even with regular use and cleaning, the engraved details remain permanent.

How often should I clean a dog ID tag?

Most dog ID tags only need occasional cleaning, depending on your pet’s lifestyle.

For active or outdoor dogs, a quick clean every few weeks helps keep the tag looking fresh. For indoor pets, cleaning less frequently is usually enough but this comes down to personal preference. Most people prefer to let the metals age naturally.

Can dog tags rust or tarnish?

Our dog ID tags are made from solid metals such as brass, copper and nickel silver.

These materials will not rust, but they can naturally develop a patina over time. This is a normal process and can be reduced or removed with light cleaning if you prefer a polished look.

How do you attach a dog tag securely?

When attaching your dog tag, avoid stretching the split ring too far apart, as this can weaken it and increase the risk of the tag coming loose.

If the split ring becomes stretched or loses its shape, it should be replaced to ensure your tag remains secure.

To prevent scratches during installation, you can apply a small piece of tape over the tag hole on both sides.

Are S-Biner clips secure for dog tags?

Yes, S-Biner clips are a secure and reliable way to attach your dog ID tag.

For maximum security, we recommend using a tag lock to prevent accidental opening.
